The KCIL organized a two-day workshop for lawyers on freedom of religion or belief (FoRB) in Slemani:

In the framework of the efforts made by KCIL to pave a high-yield environment for further strengthening FoRB in the KRI, on 20-21 July 2024, a two-day workshop was held for 20 lawyers in Sulaimani province on FoRB. The workshop was presented by two talented facilitators, Dastan Abdulrahman and Dr. Asos Brakhas, based on a manual they prepared within the project framework of Increasing the Right (FoRB) through Empowering the Agents of Change in the KRI, which is implemented by KCIL and funded by Stefanus Alliance International. This activity aimed to further familiarize lawyers with the essence of FoRB and the challenges that exist in restricting individual rights in relation to FoRB, and international human rights frameworks. The first day’s topics addressed questions related to what FoRB provides individuals. Along with the answers and comments of the participants, the six dimensions of FoRB were discussed by trainer Dastan Abdulrahman. Furthermore, Dr. Asos Brakhas spoke about the legal conditions of FoRB within international and domestic contexts.
At the beginning of the second day’s activities, the importance of FoRB and the consequences of restrictions in the social environment were discussed. As part of this activity, participants conducted a group survey to identify the most obvious factors that limit the importance of this issue. Then, trainer Dastan Abdulrahman and the trainers evaluated all the factors and formulated their recommendations based on the dialogues. Furthermore, the standards of the law on FoRB according to local principles were discussed by Dr. Asos Brakhas, providing a broad understanding to the participants. In the last topic of the workshop, the participants were divided into four groups and were instructed by Dr. Asos Brakhas to develop a field plan to further promote FoRB in society. Finally, the last comments were made on the participants’ projects and their prospects for future action plans were discussed. The workshop ended with group photography and the distribution of certificates of participation.
