The KCIL arranged a workshop on freedom of religion or belief (FoRB) for lawyers in Erbil

Kurdistan Center for International Law (KCIL) held a two-day workshop in Erbil on September 27 and 28, 2024, with the aim of initiating a vital ground for familiarizing with new dimensions of FoRB in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI). This workshop was held in cooperation with Stefanos Alliance international (SAI) and with the participation of sixteen experienced lawyers (7 female and 9 Male) from Erbil province. 
The topics of the workshop were delivered by Dr. Asos Nmiq Brakhas (University Professor at University of human development) and Dastan Ali (Director of Media and Communications and Head of Gender Unit of the Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs of the Kurdistan Region), during these two days, the participants benefited from the trainers’ lectures, they were able to become familiar with the basic concepts of FoRB and to foster a new understanding about the comparisons between domestic and international law frameworks and convections in dealings with FoRB. This was of particular importance for the concept of FoRB and the protection of the right of the individual to express his or her beliefs in Kurdish society. Furthermore, within the topics, the trainers started a grounding conversation through working group activities to further engage the participants with the essence of the workshop themes. Up to this point, comparing the FoRB in the KRI with international standards was one of the main focuses of the discussions, so that they can setting a network of like-minded people among lawyers and facilitate legal advocacy campaigns for those who came from different religious or beliefs and provide legal protection for cases that have faced legal obstacles in the courts due to their background beliefs.
