On 28 January, 2025, in Erbil
province, the KCIL team met with Mr. Firsat Ahmad, Minister of Justice of the
Kurdistan Regional Government, and his accompanying advisor, Dr. Kermanj Osman,
during an official meeting. At the beginning of the meeting, the KCIL executive
director (Hawre Ahmad) highlighted the latest activities that the KCIL has
carried out in terms of the domestication of international criminal law, fair
trial principles, and the application of international law aspects in the
prosecution of international crimes. He also referred to the bills prepared by
the KCIL through its experts related to the issues of anti-discrimination and
the prosecution of international crimes. Then, Dr. Hassan Hussein, a member of
the KCIL Executive Board, briefly referred to the legislative guideline in the
KRI as a new approach by the KCIL to support the Kurdistan Parliament and show
new legislative horizons in this field. Furthermore, Dr. Shiraz Ibrahim, the
KCIL executive Board Member, introduced the Manual on International Criminal
Law as the KCIL’s new juncture to intellectually support members of the KRI
judicial community, prosecutors, legal advisors, and lawyers in handling
international criminal cases and filling the gap in the domestic legal system
in the prosecution of international crimes.
Eventually, the Minister of Justice
regarded the KCIL’s approach and its activities as essential endeavors that
pave the way for the application of international criminal approaches in the
KRI. He emphasized that the KCIL’s efforts would align with the horizons of the
Ministry of Justice’s strategy, which includes incorporating international law
studies and other legal issues. For this purpose, he reaffirmed the Ministry of
Justice support for the KCIL in working together to provide more services to
the KRI legal community and to envision justice for all through an
international law perspective.
