On 24-25 March 2025, the KCIL, under the
Justice Resilience Initiative in the KRI and supported by the German Federal
Foreign Office’s funding from IFA (Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen), delivered
a two-day lecture at Salahaddin University at Erbil province. Where 53 law
students participated to learn about identifying types of crimes in
international humanitarian law (IHL), international criminal law(ICL), ICC fact
sheets and the kurdistan parliament efforts in domestication of ICL into the
KRI , alongside the mechanisms of the UN investigation team "UNITAD"
and the collection of evidence for investigating international crimes.
At the onset of the first day, after a
comprehensive introduction on the KCIL work by the project team, Dr. Krmanj
Osman, senior advisor of the Ministry of
Justice, delivered a lecture on the types of crimes in IHL, shedding light on
theoretical and practical principles revolving around the session topic. Later,
Dr. Tawana Hassan provided a detailed lecture on integrated law, introducing
students to the academic foundations of this field.
On the second day, Dr. Soranji, Advisor
to the Council of Ministers, gave a lecture on enhancing the Kurdistan
Parliament's role in establishing a legal framework in the Kurdistan Region.
Ms. Bano Omar, a former UNAMI employee, presented a session on document
collection for students and explained how examinations are conducted in
international and domestic courts.
Eventually, certificates were presented
to the participating students by the College of Law (Dr. Bayar Sabir) and his
accompanying colleagues. Salahaddin University also presented certificates of
appreciation to the KCIL team and trainers for their endeavours. Thus, the dean of the law department desired that
the KCIL would continue its efforts to broaden law students at the KRI
universities to understand further ok international criminal law and pave a way
for legal studies in regards.
