As part
of its ongoing efforts to enhance the capacity of young lawyers on issues
related to international law, familiarize them with the features of the Fair
trial and review the draft anti-discrimination law, the KCIL held the workshop
on October 7 and 8, 2024 in Sulaimani province. At the opening of the
first day, the lawyers were introduced to the characteristics of international
criminal justice and the prosecution of international crimes, with the focus on
the procedures followed in the judicial chambers of the International criminal
court. These topics were presented by Dr. Annie Puse in several lectures.
Later, Dr. Mohammad Rashid introduced the participants to the stages of
investigating international crimes, via hypothetical interpretations of several
specialized cases within the ICC and specialized tribunals.
On the
second day, Dr. Tawana Mohammed gave a brief presentation on the importance of
the anti-discrimination bill. He analyzed why this law is significant for
Kurdish society and explored how the discriminatory phenomena that individuals
witness every day can be addressed from a legal perspective. In the afternoon
Dr. Sarkawt Jalil facilitated an open discussion with the participants to
further enrich the bill and give the participants the opportunity to present
their legal criticisms of the bill from their own perspective. It is worth
nothing that the participants made several suggestions to enrich the content of
the bill, emphasizing the importance of broadening the scope of discussion and
receiving comments with lawyers. They also highlighted that involving a wider
range of perspectives in drafting legislation, rather than off-putting to the
experts merely, could lead to a more precise and inclusive final version of it
when submitting to the KRI parliament for enacting process.
