On 14-15 May, 2025, The KCIl has arranged a
two day workshop for the Judges and General Prosecutors in the Sulaymaniyah
province, regarding the trajectory of prosecution of international crimes, and
reviewing recent progress within international criminal law frameworks for
criminal responsibility. At the outset, the workshop commenced with
introduction of the KCIL manual on procedural aspects of the ICC, ICC
factsheets, and investigation phases within ICC by Professor. Muhammad rashed.
Later, Dr. Muhamad Elwa Baddar delivered a session on the prosecution of
international crimes within the Iraqi legal system. Respectively, Dr. Gurgen
Peterson introduced the participants with individual criminal responsibility,
joint criminal enterprise (JCE). In parallel with the sessions, judge
participants and trainers were discussed around the KRI legal challenges to
prosecute perpetrators of the international crimes in terms of Iraqi penal
codes, constitutional aspects, and court proceedings and predcent judgments of
the international crime cases with legal commentary.At the outset of the second
day, Dr. Mohammed Aliwa Badr outlined the dimensions of investigating capital
crimes, and international crimes within the Iraqi legal system. Afterwards, Dr. Gurgen Petrosian Petrosian delivered
a session on Prosecuting crimes against
humanity. In the afternoon, Dr. Sanar Taha outlined the aspects considered
by the international legal in prosecution of war crimes in parallel with Recent
developments in international legal discussions focused on holding war
criminals accountable and upholding victims’ rights to justice.
